- ABSTRACT: Spectrum sensing (SS) is the important function of cognitive radio and energy detection is the most popular technique used for SS. When the channel is composite (multipath/shadowed) fading, the detection of unused spectrum holes becomes difficult for the secondary users. In this paper, the analytical expressions of average probability of detection and the average area under the receiver operating characteristic over Hoyt/Gamma composite fading channel with maximum ratio combining reception are derived. In addition, the optimized threshold has been incorporated to overcome the problem of SS at low signal to noise ratio. The effect of diversity on the performance of energy detector is also studied. To validate the accuracy of the derived results, Monte Carlo simulations are incorporated.
