- Abstract : Objective: To determine whether omega 3 fatty acids decrease the degree of epicardial and liver fat in patients with metabolic syndrome. Design and method: Prospective, open, simple randomized 1: 1, 62 patients with metabolic syndrome who attended Asistanet Cardiology and Unit Lipids and Cardiovascular Risk Military Hospital of Caracas. January to December 2014. He began prior approval of the ethics committee of the institutions and informed consent according to the Helsinki declaration. The patients were divided into 3 groups: 1) diet, exercise, vitamin E. 2) the above + Omega 3 1 gram. 3) the above + Omega 3 grams. Clinical, anthropometric, metabolic, ultrasound and echocardiography at baseline and final follow-up were compared. Statistics: T-test for independent data, p <0.05. Results: The mean between Age the 3 groups 58.43 ± 8.92, male 48.38%, baseline parameters: metabolic, lipid, liver, kidney homogeneous p > 0.05. Fat Epicardial Grade III: 67.74%. Grade II hepatic fat: 27.41%. Significant decrease was observed: groups BMI Omega3 3 grams p < 0.005; Triglycerides group Omega3 3 grams p < 0.05; Triglyceride / HDL Omega 3 group 3 grams p < 0.05. Fat Epicardial Omega 3 of 3 grams p < 0.001. Decreased non significant of the non-HDL cholesterol, and increase non significant of the HDL cholesterol in Group Omega 3 3gramos p > 0.05.
