- Abstract : Objective: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is recognized as a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors. We sought to study the prevalence of MetS, defined by the Adult Treatment Panel III criteria, in patients with Essential Hypertension. Design and method: We studied 812 hypertensives (307 men), of median age 61 (range: 16–87) years. A health questionnaire was completed for all participants, including personal history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), ischemic heart disease (IHD), smoking habits and medications taken. The waist circumference and blood pressure were measured. Fasting blood samples were obtained in order to measure glucose, and a complete lipid profile. Results: Five hundred forty five out of 812 patients (67.1%) met the criteria for MetS. MetS was more prevalent in females than in males (71.1% vs 60.6%, p < 0.01). The overall prevalence of MetS in hypertensives was 3 fold higher compared with that of the general Greek population. Prevalance of MetS in geriatric patients (aged more than 65 years) was similar to that in younger patients (67.8% vs 66.5%, p = 0.76) Concerning MetS related factors, increased waist circumference was by far the most common one (89.9%) among hypertensives who met the criteria for MetS. However, linear regression analysis revealed triglycerides serum levels as the main independent factor for the presence of MetS. Patients under antihypertensive treatment had increased risk to have MetS than those who were untreatedAbstract : Objective: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is recognized as a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors. However, linear regression analysis revealed triglycerides serum levels as the main independent factor for the presence of MetS. Patients under antihypertensive treatment had increased risk to have MetS than those who were untreated (69.8% vs 62.6%, p < 0.05). One hundred thirty four out of 149 (89.9%) of DM patients met the criteria for MetS. There was no significant difference in the incidence of smokers between hypertensives with or without MetS (24.1% vs 19.1%). Conclusions: Our results suggest that the prevalence of MetS is dramatically increased in patients with Essential Hypertension, especially in women, compared to the general population. The prevalence of MetS is not influenced by age. … (more)
