- Abstract : Objective: To study the prevalence of cardiovascular disease, hypertension and risk factors in the residents affected by the former Semipalatinsk nuclear test site. Design and method: The method of cross-sectional study was used to investigate the incidence of cardiovascular diseases and hypertension. Standard questionnaire and physical exercises were applied for every patient. Results: Since 2002 to 2009, 24, 659 (7476 M, 17209 F) patients were examined, aged 35–70 years. The overall prevalence of cardiovascular disease, hypertension and hypertension without other concomitant heart disease was found, respectively, 20633 (84%), 20106 (82 %), 8507 (34%) in areas adjoining to the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site. The average and 95 % confidence interval (CI) of the main indicators were analyzed. In patients with hypertension indicators of age 57.8 years (57.5–58.0); BMI of 26.6 (26.5–26.7); SBP 131.4 (130.76–131.94), DBP 81.8 (81.45–82.06); HR 71.4 (71.3–71.6); pulse pressure (PBP) 49.6 (49.2–50.0). Patients suffering from hypertension were studied on a background of drug therapy. In the group of patients without hypertension indicators of age 51.2 years (51.0–51.4); BMI of 26.6 (26.5–26.7); SBP 131.5 (131.08–131.92); DBP 82.59 (82.38–82.81); HR 71.8 (71.69–71.95); PBP 48.9 (48.6–49.2). In the total group examined (by Spearman rank correlation) a strong correlation was found between the level of SBP and DBP (r = 0.81), SBP and PBP (r = 0.83); moderate correlation between SAD and HR (r = 0.26), BMI (r = 0.34) and hypertension (r = 0.25), age and the presence of objective changes in the cardiovascular system (r = 0.33); a weak relationship between age and cardiovascular diseases circulatory system (r = 0.18). Comparing the two groups of hypertensive and normotensive using the U- Mann-Whitney test (at a level of statistical significance p < 0.01) revealed the existence of differences in age (p = 0.0001) on diastolic blood pressure level (p = 0.002). Conclusions: The high prevalence of cardiovascular disease among residents of areas adjacent to the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, including hypertension, was identified to a greater extent with increasing age. An association between SBP and DBP was found with the main indicators (age, heart rate, PBP, BMI, hypertension). … (more)
