Abstract

Abstract : Objective: Assessment of the risk of cardiovascular events, renal events and mortality in patients with varying degree of RAS. Figure. No caption available. Design and method: The study group consisted of all consecutive patients (n = 2059, M/F 1043/1016, mean age 51 yrs.) who underwent Doppler ultrasound of the renal arteries in the years 2005–2008 in a large tertiary university hospital. The patients were divided according to the renal aortic ratio value (RAR) into: hemodynamically significant RAS (S-RAS; RAR > = 3.5), hemodynamically non-significant stenosis (NS-RAS; 0 < RAR < 3.5) and normal renal artery group (Control). The risk of cardiovascular events, renal events and death was estimated using Cox's proportional hazard model including severity of RAS, age and gender, basing on the data from the National Health Fund on causes of hospitalization and deaths up to the end the year 2013. Results: S-RAS patients had an increased risk of death, heart failure and dialysis. NS-RAS group had an increased risk of stroke and the need to perform peripheral percutaneous angioplasty (table). Conclusions: Patients with non-significant RAS are at increased risk of vascular events comparing with those without RAS.
