Abstract

Abstract : Objective: To study the factors responsible for anti-hypertensive drug combination in a primary care setting. Design and method: Retrospective analysis of a population of 517 hypertensive patients, from a primary care setting. Age, sex, systolic blood pressure (SBP); diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR) and the number of drugs in the treatment for each patient, were valued. Blood pressure was obtained in the sitting position, with two consecutive measurements by the oscillometric method (2–3 minutes between observations). The highest records were valued. Patients were divided into two groups according to the use of 3 or more agents (group 2) or 2 or less therapeutic agents (group 1). The two groups were compared for the data collected. Linear correlations between SBP versus age and DBP versus age were performed. Results: See table below for comparison between groups. The graphs depict the linear regression lines between SBP and DBP with age, for the entire population (respectively R 2 = 0.03 and R 2 = 0.08). Figure. No caption available. Conclusions: In this aged population, the therapeutic increase seems to have been prompted by the systolic blood pressure. Age is positively correlated with SBP, unlike the DBP, whose relationship with age is reversed, suggesting a positive therapeutic benefit for this parameter.
