Abstract

Abstract : Introduction: In China, after the implementation of the Regulation on human organ transplantation in 2007, the Organ Donation (OD) and Transplantation (OT)activity has been carried out following the guiding principles of the World Health Organization (WHO) and respecting the tradition and the characteristic of the country development. Despite of recent progress, 35 cases of OD in 2010 to 4080 in 2016; China still needs to catch up with the international advanced levels in OD and OT which requires cross-disciplinary cooperation, strict organization, and certain supporting facilities and funds. As China's current overall level of OD have yet to be improved, it is necessary to concentrate resources to establish a strong and well-trained pool of professionals who can implement elements of the developed countries clinical practice in their hospitals. Several modalities of trainings directed to the Chinese health care professionals involved in the OD activities have been carried out lately. China Organ Transplantation Development Foundation (COTDF); a public-fund-raising in cooperation with the DTI Foundation have designed and applied a Training Visit Modality (TVM). Methods: T he TVM; combining both Organ Procurement Management (TPM) training and 1-week hospital visits was designed by experts in CODTF and DTI. Key professionals and opinion leaders from different hospitals around China have been selected to follow the TVM. The training includes 1 week participating in the international TPM course in Barcelona and a week visiting hospitals in Barcelona and Madrid. Moreover, a telephone was given to the visitors keeping them in a 24 hours alert in case of any donation activity happening in the hospitals. Visits in the regional and national transplant organizations were done and information about were given. A feedback survey was distributed to the participants to evaluate the applicability of the knowledge acquired. Results: Since, 2015, four editions of TVM have been performed. 35 health care professionals have benefitted out of this. the profile of the participants was; surgeons 80 % and physicians 20 %. The majority were senior health professionals; 74 % of them having 3-5 year of experience in OD activities. The majority, 87 % admit having applied the knowledge received in their clinical practice. In the hospitals involved in the TVM an organization model similar to the one observed in Spain and higher number of deceased OD per million per population (pmp) have been reported. Nanning region or Kunming pmp respectively increased from 1.6 in 2014 to 1.99 in 2016 and from 0.33 in 2014 to 1.31 in 2016. Discussion: Although this is only one branch of the training modalities there have been a considerable improvement in terms of organizations and donation number of the procedure in the hospital involved. CODTF pay attention to update the knowledge and to assure constant communication with the leading OD and OT programs of the Chinese health professionals.
