Abstract

Abstract : The cover picture shows the two tautomers of thiosulfuric acid. It is one of the prominent examples in basic courses in inorganic chemistry to demonstrate that the (OH)(OH) tautomer is unlikely because of the "double bond rule". This has been for a long time the only one argumentation for the (OH)(SH) tautomer as the acid has never been observed directly by spectroscopical methods. The isolation of pure thiosulfuric acid succeeded for the first time by reaction of dry Na2 S2 O3 with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. Surprisingly, the acid is more stable than believed before, as long as it is kept dry and below –15°C. The spectroscopical evidence is described in the article by Kornath et al. on page574 ff .
