Abstract

Highlights: The deployable element is a new method for the construction of closure joint of an immersed tunnel. It shortened the marine work time from over six month to three days in HZMB project, reducing project risk. It allows reconnection under the water, thus closure joint alignment becomes more manageable. The works of closure joint can be eliminated by integrating the deployable part into the last installed tunnel element. Abstract: A new closure joint construction of immersed tunnel, the deployable element, was developed in Island and Tunnel Project of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. The method shortens installation time at sea, enables positive connection and waterstop under water, and makes the work reversible. In this paper, the author presents the concept and critical issues of design and construction of this method. Further, its improvements for future application were discussed.
