Abstract

Abstract : This study tested for gender differences in several rich measures of relationship behaviours and attitudes among 500 married individuals in Northern Cyprus. Significantly more of the men reported verbal aggression by their spouses than the women, and the actual division of household labour is highly gendered. Men do significantly more work in male-dominated tasks such as paying bills or performing repairs or maintenance around the home, while women do significantly more work in female-dominated tasks such as planning and preparing meals, cleaning up after meals, household cleaning and laundry. There are also significant gender differences in gender ideology, attitudes toward extramarital affairs and satisfaction with the division of labour. Specifically, the results suggest that women are less satisfied with the division of household labour than men. In addition, women report being more egalitarian about gender roles than men, whereas men have more favourable attitudes toward extramarital affairs than women.
