- Abstract: Cymbopogon khasianus (Hack.) Stapf ex Bor occurring in Meghalaya is such an aromatic grass that has various therapeutic values. Essential oils were extracted through Clevenger apparatus from inflorescence and leaf of this aromatic crop. Total forty eight germplasm were collected from different localities of Meghalaya in the year 2013 and planted in the nursery for multiplication. Twenty five plants for each accession were taken from nurseries and planted at experimental farm of CSIR-NEIST Jorhat in CRBD with three replications in June, 2014 and data were recorded from the year 2014 to 2016. Twenty morphological characters and floral anatomy were studied for the characterization and identification of this grass. The oil content in inflorescence (∼0.82%) was found to be higher than the leaf (∼0.70%). As per essential oil composition, it was showed that elemicin was the major component followed by cis -asarone, β-ocimene, methyl eugenol, limonene, germacrene-D, neryl acetate, camphene, α-pinene, geranyl acetate, caryophyllene, trans β-farnesene etc. of the essential oils from both leaf and inflorescence.Therefore, ten best lines were selected from the collected germplasm on the basis of higher (> 45%) elemicin content of the essential oil. Among the germplasm line number RRLJM-546 was selected as the best genotype for high essential oil and high elemicin content.
