- ABSTRACT: Disorder-engineered TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method with twice sintering processes. The analyses of TEM, XPS and PL showed that the structural disorders existed in disorder-engineered TiO2 nanoparticles were caused by introducing a certain concentration of oxygen vacancies (VO s). These structural disorders could tailor the band structure of modified TiO2 by inducing a valence band (VB) tail detected from VB-XPS. This fabrication could not only narrow the bandgap of TiO2 to extend the optical absorption to visible response, but also provide an improvement on photocatalytic activity of TiO2 . To compare with the reference TiO2, disorder-engineered TiO2 showed a remark photodecomposition rate which is beyond 3 times higher than that of reference TiO2 .
