- Highlights: A compact and powerful method for absolute distance measurement is demonstrated. The presented system can fast measure the long distance with high accuracy and precision. Compared with asynchronous optical sampling, our system only needs one mode-locked laser. Therefore, the system is small-size and cheap. Compared with optical sampling by cavity tuning, the long fiber link is not required. Thus, the real-time stabilization and the dispersion compensation of the long fiber is not needed. The system is compact and ease-to-use, which can be used in the real field measurement. The experimental results show an agreement within ±3 µm in 75 m range, compared with the reference distance meter, showing very high accuracy and precision. Abstract: We experimentally demonstrate a method for long distance measurement using optical sampling by sweeping the repetition frequency of the frequency comb. The interferograms can be obtained by continuously changing the repetition frequency, and the distances can be determined via the peak position of the interferograms. Compared with the fringe counting interferometer, the experimental results show an agreement within ±3 µm in 75 m range.
