Abstract

Abstract : Natural fibers reinforced benzoxazine bio‐composites are one class of highly attractive engineering materials in automobile, train and aerospace fields because of high thermal stability, good mechanical and improved biodegradability properties. Unfortunately, their poor interface and flammability issues remain unsatisfactorily addressed to date. Herein, we have demonstrated the fabrication of benzoxazine semi‐biocomposites reinforced by ramie fabric which was coated with bio‐based poly(diphenolic acid‐phenyl phosphate) (poly[DPA‐PDCP]) and polyethylenimine (PEI) via layer‐by‐layer self‐assembly method. The results show that the presence of poly(DPA‐PDCP)/PEI coating can significantly improve the interfacial adhesion between fabric and the resin matrix. This enables the tensile strength and flexural strength of as‐prepared semi‐biocomposite to increase by 53% (68.7 MPa) and 113% (120 MPa), respectively. In addition, the resultant semi‐biocomposite shows superior flame retardancy with a V‐0 rating achieved in the UL‐94 test.
