Abstract

Abstract : INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus during pregnancy is associated with high urinary incontinence levels and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and progression of urinary incontinence (UI) in diabetic pregnant women during pregnancy and after delivery and to evaluate the effect of incontinence on quality of life. METHODS: Forty-five women were assessed during 34–38 weeks of gestation and 6 weeks postpartum. Urinary incontinence was evaluated by the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form. RESULTS: Mean age was 30.4 years and mean body mass index (calculated as weight (kg)/[height (m)] 2 ) was 30.2. The rate of UI in diabetic pregnant women was 70.8% during pregnancy and 78.2% after delivery and in normoglycemic women was 71.4% during pregnancy and 18.1% postpartum. The International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form quality-of-life score in diabetic pregnant women was 7.4 and 8.2 during pregnancy and postpartum, respectively, both considered serious. In normoglycemic pregnant women, the quality-of-life score was 5.3 and 6 during pregnancy and postpartum, respectively, both considered moderate. CONCLUSION: Diabetic pregnant women exhibit a delay in recovery of UI after delivery and have a worse effect on quality of life when compared with normoglycemic pregnant women.
