Abstract

ABSTRACT: This invited commentary responds to Bailliard, Carroll, and Dallman's (2018) article introducing the relevance of key concepts of Merleau-Ponty to occupational science. That work is considered in relation to Dewey's transactionalism, concluding that while Merleau-Ponty's work provides invaluable insights into habit as a driver of occupation and the micro-level operation of social processes, Dewey more fully bridges between micro and macro understandings of occupation and experience. Nonetheless, Bailliard, Carroll, and Dallman's discussion is hailed as an impressive and substantive scholarly work that extends previous theorization of the transactional nature of occupation.
