- Graphical abstract: Highlights: A β-Y2 Si2 O7 NWs-Y2 SiO5 /Y2 O3 -Al2 O3 -SiO2 glass-ceramic coating was fabricated. A porous β-Y2 Si2 O7 NWs-Y2 SiO5 coating is used for relieving thermal stress. A glass-ceramic coating acted as a barrier for the diffusion of oxygen. The synergistic effect of toughening was investigated. Abstract: To enhance the oxidation resistance of carbon/carbon composites, here we designed and fabricated a novel β-Y2 Si2 O7 nanowire-toughened Y2 SiO5 /Y2 O3 -Al2 O3 -SiO2 coating by pulse arc discharge deposition with a later hot dipping process onto SiC coated carbon/carbon composites. Triple protection of the nanowire toughening, inlaid phases and compound Y2 O3 -Al2 O3 -SiO2 glass ceramic layer are contributed to the good oxidation resistance of this coating. After 50 thermal cycles between 1673 K and room temperature, the weight loss of coated samples was only 36.0 g·m −2, and the weight loss of the coated samples was only 31.7 g·m −2 in air at 1673 K for 176 h.
