Abstract

Abstract : The revision of the ECOWAS Treaty in 1993 introduced several changes to the institutional structure of the organization. Member States intended to create a more robust organization with supranational institutions in certain areas. Several years down the line, only a few organs of the organization such as the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice (ECCJ), the Conflict Mechanism, and the ECOWAS Commission have attracted scholarly attention. This paper analyzes the role of the ECOWAS Parliament in creating a vibrant organization. It analyzes the functions of the parliament and reveals ways it can contribute to the normative and descriptive legitimacy of the organization.
