Abstract

Abstract: Through a case study of Bolton, Greater Manchester, this paper discusses questions of continuous change, development, and adaptation in the urban landscape during the decline of industry from 1909 to 1963. The aim of the study is to explore the changing attitudes of planners towards revitalizing urban landscape design in North West England. This case study presents the analysis of two visionary plans: 'Beautiful Bolton' by landscape architect Thomas Hayton Mawson, and 'Town of the Future' by urban designer Gordon Cullen. Both plans demonstrate an evolving idea of modernization of the urban landscape, from the City Beautiful approach employed by Mawson, to the Townscape modernism of Cullen.
