- Abstract: Hydroxyapatite [HA], being biocompatible is extensively used in biomedical applications. The properties of HA synthesized by sol-gel, ultrasonication and microwave technique have been investigated. Primary raw materials for this preparation were orthophosphoric acid (H3 PO4 ) and calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2 ]. The powdered HA samples obtained were analyzed for compositional, morphological and thermal features by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The broad peak at 1450 cm -1 in FTIR spectra indicated synthesis of carbonated HA by sol-gel and ultrasonication method. HA without substitution was synthesized via microwave. Hydroxyapatite loses its weight around 200 °C to 400 °C due to loss of absorbed and lattice water in all the three samples. Microwave irradiated HA is stable after 550 °C. Spheroid aggregates of nanoparticles were observed in SEM.
