Abstract

Abstract : Wellington is a very walkable capital city and recent budgets have made a real difference to walking environments in some places however, for example, citywide speed limits have not been lowered. Several exciting examples of tactical urbanism made significant street improvements for people on foot and happened smoothly while other initiatives proved contentious. They failed to gain public support or sufficient political backing or suffered poor implementation. The differences weren't down to a left/right divide, the amount in the budget nor the length and depth of consultation. What common threads make passage easier or harder?
