- Abstract: TiO2 -doped UO2 –Gd2 O3 (8% by wt Gd2 O3 ) burnable poison fuel was prepared using a co-precipitation reaction method. Doping of UO2 –Gd2 O3 with 0.05 wt% TiO2 significantly improves the sintered density, grain size, and bending strength of fuel pellets resulting from sintering at 1600 °C under hydrogen for 4 h. Additionally, homogeneous solid solutions were successfully formed without precipitation of TiO2 and/or Gd2 O3 . TiO2 doping in UO2 –Gd2 O3 fuel pellets accelerates their thermally activated material transport resulting in a decrease in onset temperature and the temperature of maximum densification rate.
