Abstract

Abstract: Issues of trait bandwidth and trait-situation interactions have been scantly considered in the personality-job satisfaction literature. We addressed these gaps with respect to extraversion's major facets of enthusiasm and assertiveness. Consistent with expectations, only enthusiasm shared a direct relationship with job satisfaction. The assertiveness-job satisfaction relationship depended upon attainment of the higher-order goal of workplace status, such that assertive employees were more satisfied with their jobs when status was high, and less satisfied when status was low. We discuss implications of our findings for research and practice. Highlights: Extraversion's two facets differentially related to job satisfaction. Only enthusiasm exerted a main effect. Assertiveness' relationship depended upon workplace status perceptions.
