- ABSTRACT: Cemented carbide, a generic name applied to the tungsten carbide-cobalt (WC-Co) metal matrix composite is one of the most commonly used material in cutting tool industries. Generally, thermal treatments are not applied to such super hard tool materials as they are highly stable and don't react to such treatments. In this research, cemented carbide tool with low and medium cobalt content were cryogenically treated and its effect on key metallurgical and mechanical properties were studied. The result shows that cryogenically treated cemented carbide tools have 11.1% and 8.3% better flank and nose wear resistance. Metallurgical evaluations revealed the microstructural changes.
