- Abstract : Most stars become white dwarfs in the final stage of their lives. Ten percent of these are magnetic, exhibiting huge magnetic fields of up to about 100000 Tesla. In this regime, the physical and chemical properties of atoms and molecules change significantly. Molecules with formal bond order of zero can become bound by "perpendicular paramagnetic bonding". In article e25391, Stella Stopkowicz explains that electronic spectra change so significantly that observational spectra from many magnetic white dwarfs cannot be interpreted without accurate theoretical predictions.
