- Summary: In this paper, a hybrid algorithm of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and the finite difference LBM (FDLBM) is proposed. The conventional LBM is known for its high computational efficiency, whereas the finite difference method can guarantee both the accuracy of the description of the complex geometry and the high resolution of the flow field by a local refined anisotropic body‐fitted mesh. The hybrid algorithm of the LBM and FDLBM takes advantage of the merits of both the methods. Four benchmark flow problems are simulated to verify the hybrid algorithm, namely, the lid‐driven cavity flow, the flow past a static circular cylinder, the flow past an impulsively started cylinder, and the flow past 2 cylinders in tandem configuration. Results from these simulations show that the hybrid method proposed in the present work works very well for viscous flows. Abstract : The proposed hybrid algorithm takes the advantage of both the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM) and the conventional lattice Boltzmann method. The complex flow structures are resolved with high accuracy by the FDLBM on a body fitted mesh, while other part of the entire flow field is simulated efficiently by the conventional LBM on uniform square girds. As a result, the hybrid algorithm is both accurate and efficient.
