- Abstract: In this work, a series of highly efficient and noble metal-free Co0.2 Cd0.8 S/g-C3 N4 nanocomposites were synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal strategy. The Co0.2 Cd0.8 S/g-C3 N4 composites modified with 10 wt% g-C3 N4 (CCNE10) exhibited the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate, which was 1.85-times as high as that of pure Co0.2 Cd0.8 S and 7.85-times higher than CdS. Furthermore, the CCNE10 catalyst was very stable in cycling hydrogen production, which is ascribed to the unique gC3 N4 modified CdS@CoS structure with fast photogenerated electron transport character. Highlights: Co0.2 Cd0.8 S/g-C3 N4 composites are synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic activity of the composites was greatly improved compared to pure CdS. The stability of photocatalyst is significantly enhanced after the addition of g-C3 N4 . Co0.2 Cd0.8 S with 10 wt% g-C3 N4 addition shows a high H2 evolution rate of 35.50 mmol h −1 g −1 under visible light irradiation.
