- Abstract : The nearby galaxies of the Local Group can act as our laboratories in helping to bridge the gap between theory and observations. In this review, we will describe the complications of identifying samples of OB stars, yellow and red supergiants, and Wolf–Rayet stars, and what we have so far learned from these studies. This article is part of the themed issue 'Bridging the gap: from massive stars to supernovae'.
