- Abstract : ( J Clin Anesth. 2015;27:33–38) Breastfeeding is recommended for its benefits to both mother and neonate. Breast milk improves neonatal nutrition and increases immunity, and positively affects the health of mothers by reducing plasma cortisol, lowering blood pressure, and increasing uterine tone. Recent animal studies have shown that oxytocin release during breastfeeding may reduce postdelivery pain. This study attempted to determine whether endogenous oxytocin secreted by the pituitary gland during breastfeeding had any impact on incisional pain, perineal pain, or cramping after cesarean or vaginal delivery.
