- Abstract : Background: Glucagon-like-peptide 2 (GLP-2) is released by L-cells in the small intestine responding to nutrient ingestion. However, its role in Crohn's Disease (CD) is not well known. Objective: To determine GLP-2 serum levels in CD patients and to correlate them with disease activity, IL-6 and TNF-α. Methods: CD patients and control group were submitted to standard test meal. GLP-2 serum levels were determined before and after meal ingestion (−15, 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 150 e 180 minutes). Area analysis under curve, CRP, TNF-α, and IL-6 dosages were also evaluated. Clinical activity was considered for values above 150 according to Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI). Results: Seven healthy individuals were selected for the control group (CG) and 20 CD patients were enrolled; 10 in clinical activity (group 1), and 10 in clinical remission (group 2). CRP ( P < 0.001) and TNF-α ( P = 0.05) levels were higher in group 1 compared to group 2 and GC. Serum levels of GLP-2 were lower in CD than CG (2.68; 2.54; 8.06 pmol/L, P < 0.001) with no difference between groups 2 and 1 (2.68; 2.54 pmol/L; P > 0.85). In group 1, GLP-2 secretion correlated with lower IL-6 levels in incremental areas of the curve at 30, 60 and total ( P < 0.033; P < 0.043; P < 0.048 respectively). In group 2, GLP-2 secretion showed a negative correlation with TNF-α in incremental areas curve at 30, 60 and total ( P < 0.048; P < 0.048; P < 0.029 respectively). Conclusions: The results show thatAbstract : Background: Glucagon-like-peptide 2 (GLP-2) is released by L-cells in the small intestine responding to nutrient ingestion. Conclusions: The results show that there is a decrease in serum levels of GLP-2 in patients with CD, as a secondary mechanism to the inflammatory process. These data may contribute with the development of new therapeutic strategies, but also to the comprehension of the metabolic manifestations related to CD. … (more)
