- Abstract : The present work deals with in situ synthesis of Ti3 Al matrix in SiC fibre reinforced composites. In this process, the matrix coated fibres were prepared through magnetron sputtering by using inexpensive titanium and aluminium, and then Ti3 Al matrix could be obtained by in situ synthesis in the subsequent hot isostatic pressing. The results indicated that the fibre volume fraction of the composites could reach 68% using physical vapour deposition, and the microstructure of in situ formed Ti3 Al matrix was fine equiaxed grain. Furthermore, the preparation process of SiC fibre reinforced Ti3 Al matrix composites was simplified which had a potential for cost reduction.
