Abstract

Abstract : Background: Brain tumor, whether primary or metastatic, with superimposed abscess is a very rare occurrence. Methods: Two rare cases of brain metastasis with superimposed abscess are presented and discussed in this study. Results: Only 28 cases of brain tumors with superimposed abscess were found in the literature, excluding 2 cases, which we mention in our case report. In previously reported cases, 60% were sellar or parasellar masses with contiguous spread of infection from adjoining air sinuses. However, in our cases, tumors were metastatic supratentorial lesions and located away from any possible local source. Conclusions: Our assumption was that distant source of infection with hematogenous spread is the cause of abscess.
