Abstract

Abstract : This article examines the prologue of Antonio de Nebrija's bilingual Castilian-Latin grammar, the 1488 Introduciones latinas, as a historical document. In this text Nebrija echoes the Laus Hispaniae [praise of Spain] first employed by Isidore of Seville in the History of the Goths, and then by various medieval historians including Rodrigo Ximenez de Rada and Alfonso X, in support of the neo-Gothic myth. Nebrija follows in the tradition of these texts in content and structure, but writes neither in favour of the Goths nor against the Arabs. Rather, he bypasses the Middle Ages to locate the true cultural heritage and borders of Spain in Roman Hispania. Nebrija uses the geography of Iberia to metonymically join the Roman and Latin past to the contemporary vernacular present and thereby close the gap between past and present made evident by his bilingual grammar. Abstract : Este artículo examina el prólogo de la gramática bilingüe castellano-latín de Antonio de Nebrija, las Introduciones latinas de 1488, como documento histórico. En este texto Nebrija se hace eco de la Laus Hispaniae [elogio o alabanza a España] empleada por primera vez por Isidoro de Sevilla en la Historia de los godos, y luego por varios historiadores medievales, como Rodrigo Ximénez de Rada y Alfonso X, en apoyo al mito neogótico. Nebrija sigue la tradición de estos textos en el contenido y la estructura, pero no escribe ni a favor de los godos, ni en contra a los árabes. Más bien, él ignora y evita la Edad Media para localizar el verdadero patrimonio cultural y las fronteras de España en la Hispania romana. Nebrija utiliza la geografía de Iberia para unir metonímicamente el pasado romano y latino a la actualidad vernácula contemporánea y con ello cerrar la brecha entre el pasado y el presente hecha evidente por su gramática bilingüe.
