Abstract

Highlights: This qualitative research identifies ways in which 'binge drinking' is defined. Individual and situational criteria were applied in participants' definitions. Overall, there was an over-estimation of what constituted high-risk consumption. Resultantly, participants did not perceive their own drinking patterns as bingeing. Highlights the need to better educate people about lower-risk alcohol consumption.
