Abstract

Abstract : Objective: The correlation of antithrombin III (ANT-III) levels to 24-hour blood pressure variability in hypertensive patients. Design and method: 137 hypertensive patients both treated and untreated (average age: 63.3 yrs, average SBP/DBP: 140/85 mmHg, average heart rate: 73 bpm, average BMI: 29.2), were subjected to 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and measurement of their antithrombin III plasma levels. The degree of SBP/DBP 24-hour variability >15 mmHg or <15 mmHg was correlated against them. Results: Figure. No caption available. Conclusions: In hypertensive patients the higher degree of 24-hour diastolic pressure variability relates to lower plasma levels of antithrombin III, thus suggesting a greater risk of thrombotic events in this group of patients.
