- Abstract : Objective: The present study compared the acute effects of exercise mode and gender on subsequent blood pressure (BP) and heart rate variability (HRV) responses during daily work. Design and method: 20 healthy adults, public servants (9W and 11 M), randomly underwent three experimental sessions in early morning prior to their work routine: RE- circuit resistance session at 40% of 1RM, AE- treadmill exercise at 60–70% of heart rate (HR) reserve and CON- resting control session. HR and BP were evaluated before and during the 1st hour of post-intervention period, as well as in the workplace at 11:30 AM, 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Results: The Area under the curve of the 9-hour of systolic (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) measurements revealed that the greatest BP reduction in men was after RE (Men: RE-DBP = −983 mmHg.540 min; RE-SBP = −1564 mmHg.540 min; AE-DBP = −175 mmHg.540 min; AE-SBP = 241 mmHg.540 min) and women after AE (Women: RE-DBP = 2712 mmHg.540 min; RE-SBP = 1399 mmHg.540 min; AE-DBP = 892 mmHg.540 min; AE-SBP = 620 mmHg.540 min). HRV analysis showed higher variations (reductions in RMSSD, pNN50, SDNN and HF, and increases in LF) after resistance exercise in both genders. Conclusions: Acute resistance exercise reduced BP during nine hours of daily work in healthy men but not in women, and can promote high autonomic stress in both genders.
