Abstract

Abstract: Former findings indicate that suicidal behavior in bipolar disorder is associated with clock genes. Additionally, numerous non-genetic risk factors are potentially associated with suicidal behavior. Therefore, we conducted an analysis of the relationship between clock genes (as distal risk factors) with clinical characteristics and the course of bipolar disorder. We also tried to obtain a predictive model for suicide attempts based on clinical and genetic data. We found associations between selected polymorphisms and: – the number of depressive episodes ( TIMELESS, PER3 ); – the average number of depressive episodes per year of illness ( TIMELESS, ARNTL ); – the ratio of depressive and hypo/manic episodes ( TIMELESS ); – the family history of suicidal attempt(s) ( TIMELESS ). Highlights: Bipolar disorder (BP) and suicidal behavior (SB) have a common denominator in the form of disturbed rhythms. Molecular genetics studies confirmed independent role of clock genes in the predisposition to BD as well as SB. The list of suicidal risk factors (integrators between genes and symptoms) is not complete and is not specific for BD. Associations between selected polymorphisms and course specifiers of BD were found. Association between TIM polymorphism and family history of suicidal attempt(s) was found.
