- Highlights: Coagulation activation and immmunothrombosis are hallmarks of sepsis. The association of microvascular thrombi with tissue damage is less well characterized. In 51 autopsies of patients with sepsis, microvascular thrombi were absent in 91.2%. Stable microvascular thrombi may not be prominent elements in the pathogenesis of sepsis.
