- Highlights: Crevice corrosion of N80 carbon steel occurs in CO2 -saturated solution with HAc. Crevice corrosion is triggered by the galvanic effect outside and inside crevice. Crevice corrosion could be inhibited by adding inhibitor at the beginning. The inhibition effect decreases when added inhibitor after corrosion for some time. A cathodic inhibitor has more effective inhibition than an anodic inhibitor. Abstract: Inhibition effect of imidazoline (IM) inhibitor on the crevice corrosion of N80 carbon steel in CO2 -saturated NaCl solution containing acetic acid (HAc) was investigated by weight loss and electrochemical measurements, and surface analysis. The inhibition effect in the solution with 3 g/L HAc, where IM as a mixed-type inhibitor with predominant cathodic effectiveness, is more prominent than that in the solution with 1 g/L HAc, where IM as a mixed-type inhibitor with predominant anodic effectiveness. IM can inhibit the crevice corrosion of the steel when added at the beginning, but not when added after corrosion for a period of time.
