Abstract

ABSTRACT: Many times, tabulated data are given only at discrete points; for example, properties of R-134a refrigerant provided at 10°F intervals. Often the value we are interested lies between the tabulated values and we use the process of interpolation to find this value. Interpolation is formally defined as "estimation of intermediate values between precise data points." In this article, we will look at the manual method to first understand the mathematics behind interpolation, followed by functions available in Excel that can be directly used for interpolation. Finally, we will learn a construct using Excel's INDEX and MATCH functions that can be reused in any Excel model.
