- Abstract : (Abstracted from Am J Epidemiol 2017;185(5):335–344) In the United States, external factors, such as accidental injury or assault, account for approximately 5% of infant mortality. While it is known that twins and higher-order multiples are 5 times more likely to die before 1 year of age than singletons, it is not clear how the risk of death due to external causes for multiples compares with that of singletons.
