- Abstract : A radial basis function controller is developed for maintaining depth of anesthesia in the desired level during surgery. A 3-compartment model with the nonlinear bispectral index (BIS) model is used to estimate the level of anesthesia while the synergic interaction of the anesthetic (propofol) and opioid (remifentanil) is considered. Inputs of model are the infusion rate of the propofol and the remifentanil, and the output is BIS. Because a white noise has been seen on our BIS clinical data, a low-pass filter has been used to remove the noise. The infusion rate of propofol is used as the control signal. The infusion rate of remifentanil constantly equals 1/25th of the infusion rate of propofol as suggested by anesthesiologist. Performance of this controller is evaluated through a simulation study and implemented on 5 patients.
