Abstract: Burkus believes that great ideas are often initially greeted with rejection, hostility, or neglect. He cites a variety of examples, from the creative/cultural (the 1913 Paris debut of Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring ) to the corporate (Kodak invented the first digital camera in 1975 but never capitalized on it). He outlines the psychological factors often at play when organizations are faced with new and challenging ideas and cites Vanderbilt professor David A. Owens's concept of the "hierarchy of no." "Regardless of how much lip service is given to wanting new, fresh ideas, " Burkus writes, "people experience a subtle bias against creativity in uncertain situations."
