Abstract : In humans, the blockage of cerebral arteries causes a decrease in blood flow to the brain, resulting in ischemic injury. Moreover, reduced blood flow restricts delivery of nutrients such as glucose and removal of metabolic waste. In stroke patients, ischemic brain injury is a major medical issue. Much can be learned from a model system such as the Arctic ground squirrel (AGS) on how to resist brain damage. This Editorial discusses a new study by Bhowmick et al . (2017) published in the current issue of the Journal of Neurochemistry that reveals that AGS hippocampus tolerates oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) injury, and that the influence of season on cerebral ischemia tolerance is inconsequential in AGS's ability to resist ischemic injury. The study provides insight into a model system with an adaptation to tolerate ischemic injury, and resist brain damage following cerebral ischemia/reperfusion.
