- Abstract: Europium doped hydroxyapatite (EDA) nanorods with various concentrations of ionic silver functionalized on its surface were prepared using a facile hydrothermal method. Enhancement and quenching in luminescence of europium was observed depending upon the concentration of silver ions. The antibacterial activity of the samples with various concentrations of silver was studied and it was observed that the antibacterial activity increased with increase in concentration of silver ions. These ionic silver functionalized EDA nanorods were found highly biocompatible to L929 fibroblast cells but were toxic to MCF-7 breast cancer cells indicating that these nanoparticles can be effectively used for theranostic applications.
