- ABSTRACT: A non‐orthogonal frequency shift keying (NOFSK) modulation technique, which increases the bandwidth efficiency of an optical wireless link based on a yellow phosphor coated‐light emitting diode (ypc‐LED), is proposed in this article. A 4‐NOFSK signal is transmitted using an optical wireless link based on the ypc‐LED. One more bit per symbol are transmitted successfully showing the only 3% increase of 2‐MHz physical bandwidth at the bit error rate (BER) below 10 −5 . It is implied that the bandwidth efficiency is increased twice as much as ypc‐LED modulated by off keying (OOK) signal. Furthermore, there was no ICI effect at the frequency spacing of 2 kHz (0.1% of 2‐MHz physical bandwidth), which corresponds to 0.1% of the symbol rate of 2 Msymbols/s. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
