- Abstract: The in situ ZrB2 /AA2014 composite is being extensively fabricated by the exothermic salt-metal reaction method. The potassium hexafluorozirconate (K2 ZrF6 ) and the potassium tetrafluoroborate (KBF4 ) were used to synthesize the ZrB2 particles through the salt reaction route The developed insitu aluminium matrix composites were examined for the impending improved mechanical properties such as macro hardness, micro hardness and tensile strength. The developed composites were characterized by optical microscope and X-ray diffraction. X-ray diffraction ensures the formation of ZrB2 phases and also confirms that no other reaction outgrowth compounds are traced in the composites. Optical micrographs display that the particles are nearly uniformly distributed in the matrix alloy. The increase in weight percentage of zirconium diboride particles enhances the hardness and the tensile strength of the composite.
