- Abstract: Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a novel solid state process to join non-ferrous metals and the FSW tool pin profile plays a major role in theformation of defect free joints. FSW process leads to joints with fine recrystallized microstructure and better post welding formability. In the present work, FSW butt joints of AZ31B Magnesium alloy were produced using two different pin profiles i.e. cylindrical and truncated conical made of H13 tool steel at different process parameters. Different types of defects at different locations were analyzed and discussed by joint appearance and microstructure.
