- Abstract: Alpha spectra were acquired with Quantulus 1220 liquid Scintillation Counter (LSC) and correlations among parameters, such as alpha particle energy, sample quenching, peak's centroid and resolution were established. The effect of quenching and factors such as types of counting vials, extractive reagents and composition of extractive scintillation cocktail on alpha spectral resolution, was experimentally studied. Highlights: The effect of types of vials, scintillation cocktails and extractive reagents on alpha spectral resolution is studied, for a Quantulus 1220. Correlations between alpha energy, degree of quenching and various spectral parameters were established. The effect of sample quenching and alpha particle energy on spectral resolution and peak positions were investigated. Teflon vials offered a better energy resolution than HDPE and glass vials. TBP, TOPO, and HDEHP, offered better resolution, regardless of their amount in the extractive scintillation cocktail.
