Abstract

ABSTRACT: This paper is a brief overview of dominant authors and theories regarding surveillance relevant to housing education. A greater understanding of the intellectual foundations of surveillance will enable families to negotiate a position on privacy and observation. Technologies are now acceptable and sophisticated in their ability to watch our homes. This paper raises the question as to whether the technology has advanced faster than the prudent questioning of its use, raising moral and ethical questions that are not presently addressed by housing education literature. The goal of this paper is to provide a broader conceptual framework providing an overview of historical intellectual sources. The implications and questions raised by this review should engender further research studies that lead to a strong foundation in surveillance studies for the home.
